The story of a photographer

Hi - my name is Simon Maycock, a photographer based in North Cornwall and often to be found on Dartmoor. The photo above is a selfie, with my partner Wendy and our much photographed pug, on a hike up Bodmin moor.

I started my photography career fairly late in life, after many years working in senior technical roles in the IT industry. I started off my commercial career as a freelance news and stock photographer. Within a year I was being regularly published in all the major UK papers, including the Times, Telegraph, Sun, Guardian, BBC TV and many more. I still do the news pictures, mainly with my weather pictures - usually getting drenched at the likes of Porthleven in the winter storms. Notable moments in 2022 included the royal visit by Prince Charles to the Royal Cornwall show, and having several pictures from that in the national press and magazines.

Now we're over the pandemic ( fingers crossed ) I'm re-focussing my photography activity on Weddings, events and assignments in Cornwall and Devon. Throughout the year I will often be out early morning capturing the sunrise around the coast of Cornwall.

My style of photography for weddings is mainly photo documentary, capturing moments as they happen to the very best of my ability. Of course most people expect to have the normal group pictures, portraits of the bride and groom and I'm happy to do these with the minimum of posing to get the best result. If we can include the wonderful scenery around Cornwall and Devon in your pictures, especially the beaches, then so much the better

The "Nitty Gritty"

I shoot with Sony and Fuji cameras, primarily stills but we will do videos sometimes, including with my small drone that I hold a commercial license for.

I have full commercial public liability insurance - happy to provide policy numbers and insurers if required. I've got at least 2 of everything needed to cover unexpected breakdowns, all my cameras have dual memory cards backing up images as they are taken, and I will normally balance shoots between different cameras and lenses.
